How we got this
How to calculate slope
Slope is rise over run: m = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁). A positive slope rises to the right; a negative slope falls.
What does slope mean?
A zero slope is horizontal. An undefined slope is vertical because the run is zero. The farther a value is from zero, the steeper the line.
Slope-intercept and point-slope form
Slope-intercept form is y = mx + b, where b is the y-intercept. Point-slope form is y − y₁ = m(x − x₁), using one known point.
Slope percentage and angle
Grade percentage is slope × 100. The slope angle is arctan(slope), expressed in degrees.
How to use it
Choose what you know
Start with two points, a slope and point, an equation, or rise and run.
Enter the values
Use positive, negative, decimal, or zero values. Fractions work for slope.
Read the line
See the slope, equation, intercepts, angle, grade, and a simple coordinate graph.
Questions
How do you calculate slope from two points?
Subtract the y-values for rise, subtract the x-values for run, then divide rise by run: m = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁).
What does undefined slope mean?
Undefined slope means the run is zero. The line is vertical, written as x = a value.
What is zero slope?
Zero slope means a horizontal line. Its y-value stays the same as x changes.
How do I find slope from an equation?
Put the equation in y = mx + b form. The coefficient m is the slope.
What is rise over run?
Rise is the vertical change and run is the horizontal change. Their ratio is the slope.
How do you convert slope to percentage?
Multiply the slope by 100. For example, 0.75 is a 75% grade.
How do you find the angle of a slope?
Take arctan of the slope and express the result in degrees.
What is slope-intercept form?
Slope-intercept form is y = mx + b, where m is slope and b is the y-intercept.
What is point-slope form?
Point-slope form is y − y₁ = m(x − x₁). It uses a known slope and one point on the line.
